Central Communicators Toastmasters

About Us

Where and When?

Central Communicators meets every second Wednesday lunchtime at 12.15pm, and typically runs for about an hour. The venue is in the seminar room on level one of the Central Park building, which can be accessed from a stairwell immediately outside the main foyer area. The Central Park building is on the corner of Hay Street and William Street, in the centre of Perth. More information about the venue can be found on the building's web site: http://www.central-park.com.au

The area is well serviced by public transport and parking is available at several multi-level carparks in the central business district. The closest public car park is under the Rydges Hotel, and can be entered from King Street, near the St Georges Terrace end.

What sort of people attend?

Toastmasters is an ideal training ground for anybody who is at all apprehensive about speaking in front of an audience as well as anybody who wants to improve their self confidence or leadership skills.

Our club includes people from all walks of life. Members typically work in the city, but there are no specific restrictions.

Central Communicators currently has about twenty members with a good balance of experienced and newer members and meetings are both inspirational and varied.

What should I expect?

The meetings follow a fairly consistent schedule each week. For instance, a typical meeting might run:

12:15 Welcome (by the Toastmaster of the day)
12:17 "Inspiration" (a 2 minute warmup speech)
12:20 Two or three prepared speeches
12:35 Feedback about the prepared speeches
12:40 Table Topics (4-5 members are randomly selected to deliver a brief, unprepared speech on a specific topic)
12:47 Evaluation of the impromptu speakers
12:51 Timing report
12:53 General Evaluation (feedback about the other speeches/roles)
13:00 Club President address

The meetings are designed to allow participants to practice different skills relevant to both their business and private lives, such as; the ability to respond to unplanned questions effectively (table-topics); identification of successful techniques and tips that we can apply ourselves (evaluations/feedback); the importance of maintaining time limits (all aspects are timed).
These skills are imperative for those hosting/presenting at meetings, giving speeches at weddings and apply to various aspects of everyday life.

Sounds Interesting ... What now?

If you'd like any more information, please email us at marlene.ong@hotmail.com. We're all pretty enthusiastic about our club, so we'll be more than happy to respond to any queries you might have.

Guests are always welcome to attend a few meetings, without charge, while they get a feel for what happens and how it works. Also, as a guest, you won't be asked to participate in any of the meeting roles (unless you'd like to). Once you've attended a few meetings. you can decide whether or not it suits you.

So mark it in your calendar now!
